Digital Financial Services Workshop, November 2017

All the Lahore folks should brace themselves for a two-day Fintech and Digitization extravaganza at Arfa Software Technology Park (Map) during November 15th, 2017 till November 16th, 2017. The second day session will be observed at Avari Hotel, Lahore.

ITU FinTech Center in collaboration with University of Washington Digital Financial Services Research Group (DFSRG) brings a two-day workshop bringing members of the DFS academic community together with industry partners to develop an agenda for successful collaboration on research and the dissemination of new technologies.

Fintech has slowly paved it’s way into Pakistan’s business whether it’s on a private or a small scale level, digital monetization was inevitable. Especially in early 2015, Fintech became a huge boom in the private sector and set out to disrupt the banking sector. Telenor and Jazz were one of the few trailblazers of this small but powerful industry that was set out to make a revolutionary impact in the Financial and Banking Sector of the country.

Despite the heavy merchandise of digital monetization, Pakistan is certainly somewhat lagging in terms of financial inclusion of local enterprises. To overcome this barrier, DFS Workshop aims to collaborate between ICTD Community (International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development) and the industry specialists to work on vexed issues and to come up with practical motions through round table discussions, working groups, and position papers. The workshop also intends to develop a research agenda to address technology challenges for adoption to Digital Financial Services in Pakistan and elsewhere.

Assistant professor at Berkeley School of Information, Joshua Blumenstock will be making an appearance on the second day of the event where he will be covering a ‘hotcake’ topic. His research lies at the intersection of machine learning and development economics and focuses on using novel data and methods to better understand the causes and consequences of global poverty.

The art of teaching machines to intelligently make and derive decisions from the available data and to incorporate this learning into a fintech module is certainly a thrilling discourse.
